Austin Tunnell
After a brief stint as a CPA at KPMG and two years in the Peace Corps, my journey into building began in the jungles of Panama in 2013, where I first realized that how we build shapes how we live. Captivated by this idea, I went on to apprentice under a master mason and timber framer. My foundation in traditional design and construction merged with a deep appreciation for human-scaled cities, cultivated through my travels. This led me to ask: Why, as the wealthiest nation in history, do we no longer build the kinds of places we all claim to love? Will anything we build today still stand in 500 years? And do our current building practices serve people—or something else?
In 2017, I founded Building Culture to explore these questions. I believe we must start with the human experience—understanding what people need to truly thrive—and build our cities, buildings, and neighborhoods around that. The answer doesn’t lie in a hyper-rational, technophilic, siloed approach, but in a holistic fusion of the liberal arts, construction, and real estate—a blend of science and art, tradition and modern innovation.
Building Culture began as a boutique design-build company specializing in traditional brick masonry. Today, we are evolving into a holistic real estate development firm, focused on creating walkable, human-scaled neighborhoods that enrich the world. Our scope spans acquisition, syndication, entitlements, urban design, architecture, construction, interiors, and eventually, property management—enabling us to steward projects long-term.
Currently, we are in the early stages of our most ambitious project to date: a $30 million infill neighborhood of townhouses, live/work units, and boutique commercial spaces, slated to break ground in 2025.
